With no fingerprints or dental x-rays available, the family of 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan will have to wait, perhaps several weeks, before a girl's body found near the River Raisin is positively identified. ( I used to have a stalker problem so not only do I have fingerprints, I keep a DNA sample for each child in the freezer. Just take a sterile gauze pad and rub it on the inside of their cheek. Or if they cut themselves clean the blood with just the pad. Then place it in the freezer inside a plastic bag, change every few months. But that is besides the point. Can't the police try to get fingerprints from her toys. I know that Jennifer Buchanan is a horrible parent, but doesn't she deserve the right to know if her child is alive or dead.)
Wayne County Medical Examiner Carl Schmidt said the findings of the death remain pending and could take weeks before results come in. Tissue samples were sent for special testing.
The delay is difficult, to say the least, family members said today.
"I just hope nobody else has to go through this again," said Nevaeh's grandmother and legal guardian, Sherry Buchanan.
Meanwhile, two persons of interest in the 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan case arrested on possible parole violations have been moved to a state prison in Jackson.
The Michigan Department of Corrections confirmed Monday that George Kennedy and Roy Smith, both convicted sex offenders who know Nevaeh's mother Jennifer Buchanan, have moved from the Monroe County Jail to the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center in Jackson.
Investigators in Nevaeh's case named both as persons of interest along with James Easter of Monroe, who was later cleared in the case after being arrested on unrelated arson charges.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said other evidence from the River Raisin gravesite have yet to be processed at state police crime labs in Northville and positive identification won't be made until DNA from the autopsy is matched up against Nevaeh's samples.
Buchanan said identification has been delayed because the family doesn't have Nevaeh's fingerprints on file. There also are no dental records for Nevaeh, who has only visited the dentist once. (Another reason all children, no matter how poor, need access to the dentist.)
Shaun Lawson, Nevaeh's uncle, said authorities would not release information on the cause of death to the family unless the girl is confirmed to be Nevaeh. "It is best if they take their time. Our family needs to know for sure," Lawson said.
Nevaeh went missing May 24 when her mother told police she was playing in her apartment complex parking lot alone. A body matching Nevaeh's description was found Thursday in a shallow grave covered by concrete or cement.
