The much anticipated Bachchan family appearance on the red carpet in Dubai did not happen. Instead, Amitabh Bachchan made a lone appearance for the gala screening of the musical “Nine”, marking the opening of the 6th Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) last night (December 2009).
He stayed on the red carpet for a good half hour, mobbed by the press at Madinat Arena.
Big B looked his usual dapper self in a black Nehru jacket as he smiled and waved at the people lining both sides of the red carpet and endlessly posed for photos. Asked which designer he was wearing, he said “This is all me.”
Later in the evening, he was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award by Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority.
Disappointingly, Amitabh Bachchan was not asked to speak and he left the stage with the plaque and the Cartier watch presented to him.
Considering this would have been probably his first ever Lifetime Achievement Award, we missed hearing what he would have said. After all, first is always special.
Back on the red carpet, Manisha Koirala, a DIFF jury member, looked extremely pretty in her Sabyasachi Mukherjee black and maroon Anarkali, which she paired with tights and boots! May be, it was just an attempt to globalise her Indian outfit, but she looked so pretty (so much better than in photos) that we willingly forgive her experiment-gone-wrong.
