You're wrong. The promotion is for ANY mac before September 16, as Nuks said. They can't (and won't) change the terms of the promotion before it expires.

I'm planning to order a MBP and a nano right after Paris. If MBPs come out before Paris, I'm still going to wait to see if they revise the nano...that would make up for the 3 months of waiting to get the MBP.

Not sure why you guys think you will get a free iPod with a new MBP.. Did you read the Terms and conditions? Where does it list the new MBP ?

    http://www.apple.com/uk/backtoschool/?cid=WWW-EUUK-BTS20060801-8EBFY

They did add the Mac Pro so you guys still have hopes to get a free iPod if released in time.

Jobs is right - big difference with your phone remembering locations, as opposed to Apple actively gathering it.

I totally agree. Just give users a way to kill the database and issue is over. What I would like to know is what was the original purpose?

I would really love to have a Mac Tablet. However, I don't see this happening anytime soon. But believe me, I would LOVE to have one.

I'm really tired of the common 'wisdom' that looks at current phone-only numbers (dominated by Android 2-fers) and declare the inevitable, eternal dominance of Android, particularly in light of articles like this...
    http://www.comscore.com/Press_Events/Press_Releases/2011/4/Apple_iOS_Platform_Outreaches_Android_by_59_Percent_in_U.S

That's 59% iOS over Android when you count the whole platform. (That's 59% MORE, not 59 apple, 41% android).
That's a single iOS ecosystem that includes THE platform of the future (the only 'finished' tablet currently available), compared to an Android environment that's fragmented even in phones, and completely disjointed with its beta (of course) tablet platform (fresh out of the oven, no muss, no testing.)

Just as the media pumps up the underdog in a political race to sell more ad minutes (no one wants a boring horse race), Apple MUST be taken down a notch if there are going to be page hits.

My money is where it counts... on AAPL.

Damn, and I just got my new MacBook yesterday

oh well, I caught the last round of iBook updates last year, and that left me on the bleeding edge for several months. I'll see what it looks like in second place for a while.

Plus if my MacBook gets lonely and depressed he can talk to my 1st gen PowerMac G5

(God I need more RAM for the MacBook)

I don't like this at all.

I mean, yeah, hopefully they will distribute Mac OS X Lion on disc in retail stores but I like to have physical copies of my software, rather than a file on my computer. The chance of data corruption is far less likely, depending on how well you take care of your discs.

Also, I'm estimating that Mac OS X Lion will be a pretty large file. Maybe 4gb? Not everyone has broadband, some people are still on dial-up. Can you imagine how long it would take downloading a 4gb file over 56k?

Also, how will they distribute the download? Will the file be an ISO or DMG file? How do you install it from that file?

    LAME

    • $2,499 standard price of Mac Pro ($2,299 for Education)

——$2,124 is the lowest you can configure the Mac Pro ($1,962 for Education)
And even without edu discount, still $1000 cheaper than a comparable Dell. Lame. ;)

I read a comment on Maccentral from someone saying they were going to wait for a "true" dual processor. What is not true about the Mac Pro configuration? Or did that poster not know what he was talking about?
It's two chips, each a dual... maybe the person meant they're waiting (as am I possibly) for "true quads," meaning 4 CPUs on one chip? That's expected (Kentsfield) by the end of the year. (But then after that, an even "truer" quad chip is expected :p ) Anyway, the benefit of 4-on-1-chip with Kentsfield may be mainly one of price. Which is enough to make me consider waiting, however.

There are many of you I want to beat with a spiky stick right now. Let's consolidate you into one bullet-point list of whiners:

So..I have one on order too, not sure if I am all that excited, which sounds ridiculous. Ive been holding out replacing my 1.8G5 for a while, and my plan was to get a cheapo quad g5 once these things came out, but the 2.66 quad is pretty damn cheap compared to what the old quad was. Hell, ebay wont have deals on used G5 quads that are worth the "used" risk for ages now.

About the RAM, I ordered mine with the Radeon card, which will postpone my order some. By then, someone will have one of these machines, and figure out what the deal is with the RAM heatsinks so I can order more..i hope :o

edit: dont forget, you get a free nano with edu purchase!

...Verizon was reliable, although their network has been terrible. As I've said, I never get 3 bars or above, and I live in Denver! The service will constantly go out whenever I'm in NYC. The phones do seem to be cheap. My Samsung A670 is probably the only non-joke phone they had, and I've been pretty happy with it.

I have Verizon, my wife T-Mobile. T-Mobile works fine in New York City, and so does Verizon. Especially in the past year Verizon has spent literally a fortune improving their reception, so that dead spots are much fewer than they used to be. I believe this is why they ignore "cool" phones, they are going for reliability with companies who buy in bulk for their employees, not really for consumers - go to a Verizon store if you want to be convinced they don't really care about the common man -

but what I am trying to say is, that I disagree about reception of Verizon: it's very good, and especially so outside of the major business cities like NYC and Washington. My wife's T-Mobile often is out of range when we travel, and we have to use my Verizon phone.

That said, Verizon rarely, with the exception of the recent Treo 700p, gets the really cool phones, so will probably bypass Apple as well.

Steve needs to provide a better answer because this one makes him look like a liar.

Ok, so there's a DB on your phone and the computer it syncs to. How do we know it's not being used in some nefarious way? Why isn't it regularly wiped?

I ran the app on my Macbook and it showed where I was since I had the phone....it was scary...

And how do you operate it? A server can be accessed from a workstation but a Mac Pro IS a workstation, it's not a server. It's not a logical step. I have a professional photographer in the family, with a Mac Pro. He needs to load his RAWs onto his Mac for post processing. How to do this if that Mac is in another room, in a rack  Very inconvenient if you ask me.

Not sure you quite get it. The idea here would be that the one machine could be used either as a workstation, or as a server. You could use it in a SOHO situation as a workstation/under the desk server. An enterprise could configure it as a rack mounted server. One assembly line. Two products.

    - iTMS Movie Store;

    - new Nanos 6 and 8Gb in anodized metal;

    - slightly updated iPod with 80Gb;

    - Airport Express Video.

And NOTHING ELSE...don't dare dream about updated MBs or MBPs...these have NOTHING to do with a special event on movies and multimedia...sorry to burst your bubble...SJ told me that already...

to be fair, the rumor puts this out 2 years, and ARM does have higher-end chips planned.

    arn

And Intel will have way better chips than ARM will have 2 years from now.

Not to mention the additional software transition this would require.

This rumor makes no sense at all. Absolutely no sense.

In regards to calculators and OSX spotlight
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calculator_input_methods
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_operations

With the immediate execution mode of operation each binary operation is executed as soon as the next operator is pressed, therefore the order of operations in a mathematical expression is not taken into account. Scientific calculators have buttons for brackets and these calculators can take order of operation in to account

Different calculators follow different orders of operations. Most non-scientific calculators without a stack work left to right without any priority given to different operators

while more sophisticated calculators will use a more standard priority

Who said that this an equation? What is the variable that is unknown?

    2 is still winning!

Well it is an equation as it is the same as as saying x=48/2(9+3)

Yeah, sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I have an order in too. Hopefully, someone will post a lower cost alternative than the Apple Store. One thing I did notice about the Magellan Car Kit is you can put the iPhone in it with a case. Might be worth waiting?

I'd be so pissed/happy if it were to become free... 1 year of .Mac and 2 years of MobileMe.

    Pissed, I spent $99 for 3 years

Happy, more people will have access to MobileMe's benefits.

If one paid for MM, and it went free, apple would most certainly push this money towards either itunes or whatever addtional premium services a FREE MM would offer, which of course they would

It makes a lot of sense. Quietly cooling two CPUs, a high-end GPU, 8 DIMMs and multiple drives in such a form factor makes me a little dubious. That and it seems pure hearsay on the part of 9 to 5 mac.

Mods please don't lock this, discussion of Mac Pro related articles in the main news section is really hard to have as 90% of the posts are by people who have little interest or knowledge in the topic.
I like the idea (exists with other cases, and the one's I'm thinking of, such as offerings from SuperMicro, work very well).

My concern though, seems to be the same as yours. Specifically packing a workstation into a 3U enclosure. 4U or even 5U, fine, as there's sufficient space for full height PCIe cards and cooling (3U seems to tight though for a workstation that has to be planned thermally speaking with all slots filled).

Yet another sign Apple is going to kill the Mac Pro.

You'll see! With Final Cut Pro on it's deathbed there is no way the Mac Pro is sticking around!

    /s
I get the sarcasm. My issues aren't with the concept of the case that's usable as both a tower or rackmount though.

As far as the MP's continuation, it's to do with the direction Intel's going to meet enterprise customer requirements/requests that I've noticed (more cores than most workstation software can utilize, and the price is going up as a result). Add in Apple's margin on smaller unit sales vs. other workstation vendors, it doesn't look good.

TB further complicates the issue, particularly when a single die consumer desktop CPU releases with 8 cores (not to far away), as the iMac could be considered as a replacement (not ideal, but functional enough for quite a few users).

Keep in mind, creative professionals don't actually need ECC as the software's not based on recursion (worst case, flipped bits due to radiation cause a bad pixel here and there, not the entire image).

doubtful, this is a key switcher market... it would be crazy to axe the very thing that will continue to switch the PC builders/gamers over the next 5 years... this is a key ingredient to apple taking the industry over with time.
Not so much lately, given the pricing since 2009 (enthusiast users are being forced out due to costs). Even professionals (i.e. independents and SMB's <particularly S for small>) are feeling the pinch as well, going by posts here on MR.

I think the iMac will take care of gamers...
This is what Apple expects them to buy from what I can tell (i.e. SP MP is ~$1000USD more than a PC equivalent).

You are essentially now using a PC with EFI firmware and OSX operating system. The only advantage over a hackintosh is that it's all fine tuned, modified and tested under one roof ....
    Exactly.

From an electronics POV, the MP is made of the same equipment used in PC equivalents. Apple uses the case to distinguish it physically, and the firmware to lock OS X to the machine.

The desktop market has been exhausted and its time passed anywhere, so now it's all about mobile and portable computing.
This has been claimed for awhile, and in developed nations, it has its validity.

But when you look to less developed nations, desktops still out-sell laptops due to more bang-for-the-buck (i.e. look at China; they're less likely to have more than one system, so they choose the desktop for more power at a lower cost = higher desktop sales currently). This will change over time, but by then, citizens of developed nations may be so poor, that we have to dump laptops and devices for desktops again. :D :p

    - Dust filters

Definitely, given the cost of the MP.

How does having the PSU on the bottom keep it cool?...

Hot air rises, so the heat generated by the PSU will just rise and fill up the case.

Unless I'm missing something or the laws of physics have changed in recent years?
The PSU doesn't run as hot as the CPU or GPU (hot air from the boards rising into the PSU doesn't do it any favors). Hot air off of the PSU heat sinks can be exhausted before it ever rises to the boards. More of a win-win.

Of course, by using baffling (separating the case into chambers), it won't matter that much anyway thermally speaking.

But even with baffles, the layouts are improved with PSU's located on the bottom IMO.

Or was that simply the strawman rhetorical question of the day ... err ... hour?

It seemed like a cogent point to me. Your perspective will change if you do any number of things. Bet on horse races for a living and you'll never look at a horse in the same way that other people do.

    Earlier itcheroni said ...
I am primarily focused on making money through the time decay of the options.

Now I don't mean to be cruel, but he isn't making anything, creating anything or contributing anything to society through this livelihood. He's merely siphoning off the flow. And he wants to talk about perspective? It seems to me that making a living that way is guaranteed to give you a warped perspective.

    It's a perspective I'm glad I don't share.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it was my understanding that Yonah and Merom were being priced identically (at same clock speed) by Intel.

Yes, but after the Merom release the prices of Yonah will be cheaper.

I can see apple maybe putting an ARM chip in the macbook so it can run in low power tablet mode, but to complete replace the CPU really makes no sense. However lots that the do seldom makes sense, so who knows. The reason I won't be buying a mac again is simply because they are severly underpowered, gaming really sucks on them compared to what you can get on a PC.

Apple needs to replace the optical drive with another AMD GPU, and Crossfire them sexy beasts up. Gone will be the days of Macs that can't run every game in existence at max settings.

I'm surprised by the amount of resistance I'm seeing to this idea. I've assumed for a while that this move was inevitable. ARM procs will be fast, relatively cheap, cool, and energy efficient. Apple already has an OS for it which will see considerable convergence with the Mac OS in the near future. This will be a great move for Apple and for consumers, as was the move to Intel.

I agree. Like i stated earlier, the transition from PowerPC to Intel was... Uncomfortable, but it was not painful in any way. There was a slight performance hit from running things via rosetta, but remember, rosetta is not wine. Wine's performance issues stem from the fact that it's having to implement an entire OS. All rosetta does is translate PowerPC instructions to Intel instructions and not much else. If Apple made the transition, the majority of users wouldn't even notice, because all their intel apps would continue to run for many years to come. The transition would be almost entirely transparent to the average user, just as the PowerPC/Intel transition was.

Also, knowing Microsoft, if they ever made the switch to ARM, they would provide TWO versions of windows, one that works with ARM, and one that works with intel, creating the severe fragmentation that exists with 32-bit windows vs 64-bit windows, but for Intel/ARM. It's the main reason MacOS is so far ahead in terms of 64-bit deployment. No 64-bit macs are running 32-bit only OSes, and the devs know it. Not so with the windows world. I think the transition would be extremely painful for Microsoft if they don't at least try to implement universal binaries.
