This is the moment a Japanese Coast Guard ship was confronted by the tsunami that hit the coast of Japan on Friday.
Amazing video footage shows a huge wave looming on the horizon of an otherwise calm Pacific.
The wall of water was created by an earthquake off the coast of Japan, and it is believed to be the first footage of the tsunami in the open ocean.
But as their ship safely rode the wave, its crew were powerless to do anything but warn their countrymen it was on its way.

On its way to destruction: The ship rides over the tsunami as it heads for the north east coast of Japan
And after it passed the 970-tonne coast guard vessel Matsushima it went on to the coast of Japan where it killed at least 6,500 people with another 10,700 missing. The ship is lifted up tens of feet in the air and splashes down safely on the other side. A second smaller wave hits the ship minutes later.
When the wave hit Japan, the power generated by the earthquake sent water surging over the coast, flattening scores of coastal towns
